3M Cast Vinyl Specifications — Material & Durability Data

Material Specifications

Not all vinyl is created equal. Understanding the difference between cast and calendered vinyl is the single most important factor in how long your decal lasts, how it looks, and whether it damages your paint on removal. Here is everything you need to know about what we use and why.

Cast Vinyl vs. Calendered Vinyl — Comparison

Specification 3M Cast Vinyl (What We Use) Calendered Vinyl (Cheap Alternative)
Thickness 2 mil (0.05 mm) 3–4 mil (0.08–0.10 mm)
Outdoor Durability 7+ years 1–3 years
Shrinkage Zero — dimensionally stable Shrinks in cold weather, exposing adhesive edges
Conformability Conforms to curves, rivets, and recessed areas Flat surfaces only — lifts on curves
Removal Clean removal, no paint damage Can bake into clear coat after 1+ year
UV Resistance 5–7 year fade resistance 6–18 months before noticeable fading
Best For Vehicles, outdoor signage, long-term applications Indoor stickers, short-term promotions

True Die-Cut — No Background, No Border

Every decal we produce is true die-cut. This means there is no white or clear background surrounding your design. The vinyl is precision-cut to the exact contour of your graphic using a digital plotter with 0.1 mm accuracy.

Only your graphic remains on the vehicle — no rectangular border, no visible background material, no clear carrier film showing at the edges. This is what separates professional vehicle graphics from cheap printed stickers.

Ink Technology — Eco-Solvent, Not Water-Based

We use eco-solvent inks, not water-based inkjet inks. This distinction matters enormously for outdoor durability.

  • Eco-solvent inks chemically bond with the vinyl substrate at a molecular level. The ink becomes part of the vinyl, not a layer sitting on top. This provides 5–7 year UV fade resistance and makes the print waterproof immediately.
  • Water-based inks (used in consumer inkjet printers and many online print shops) sit on top of the vinyl surface. They fade within 6–12 months of outdoor exposure and can smear when wet unless laminated.

Our eco-solvent prints do not require lamination for UV protection — the ink itself is inherently UV-stable. We offer optional lamination for applications requiring scratch resistance (e.g., floor graphics, high-touch surfaces).

Transfer Tape — One-Piece Application

Every decal ships pre-masked with clear transfer tape. This means your entire design — whether it is a single word or a complex multi-colour graphic — applies as ONE piece.

You do not need to align individual letters or elements. The transfer tape holds everything in perfect registration. After application, you peel the transfer tape away, leaving only the vinyl on your vehicle.

We use medium-tack transfer tape that releases cleanly from the vinyl without lifting it off the surface. Cheap high-tack tape can pull the vinyl back up during removal — we do not use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your car decals waterproof?

Yes. Our eco-solvent inks chemically bond with the vinyl at a molecular level, making the print inherently waterproof from the moment it dries. After the 72-hour adhesive curing period, your decal is fully car-wash safe, rain-proof, and snow-proof. The vinyl itself is non-porous — water cannot penetrate it.

Can I put these decals on a dishwasher or appliance?

Our vinyl is rated for temperatures up to 107°C (225°F), so it handles the exterior of dishwashers, washing machines, and other appliances without issue. However, it is not designed for constant submersion in water or direct contact with steam jets inside a dishwasher. For interior dishwasher branding, you would need a specialty waterproof label — contact us for options.

Where is your vinyl sourced from?

We use 3M-grade cast vinyl manufactured in North America. 3M is the industry standard for vehicle graphics worldwide, used by professional wrap shops, fleet graphics companies, and sign manufacturers. We chose cast vinyl over calendered specifically because it performs in Canadian winters — no shrinkage at -40°C, no cracking, no edge lifting.
