Who Needs a USDOT Number?
The FMCSA requires a USDOT number for any commercial vehicle:
- Operating in interstate commerce in the United States
- With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 lbs or more
- Transporting hazardous materials requiring placards
- Designed to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
- Designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
For Canadian carriers: Any truck crossing into the US for commercial purposes needs a USDOT number, regardless of whether it already has a CVOR certificate.
USDOT Number Display Requirements
FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 390.21) require:
| Element | Requirement |
|---|---|
| USDOT Number | Both sides of the power unit, preceded by "USDOT" |
| Minimum Height | 2 inches (5 cm) |
| Colour | Contrasting with background |
| Legibility | Readable at 50 feet during daylight |
| Legal Name | Company legal name or trade name on both sides |
| MC Number | If applicable, preceded by "MC" |
USDOT vs MC Number: What is the Difference?
A USDOT number identifies the carrier for safety audits and inspections. An MC (Motor Carrier) number is your operating authority to transport regulated commodities for compensation. Not all carriers need both:
- USDOT only: Private carriers hauling their own goods
- USDOT + MC: For-hire carriers transporting goods for others
- USDOT + MC + CVOR: Ontario for-hire carriers operating in the US

What is a DOT number?
A USDOT number is a unique identifier assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to commercial motor carriers operating in the United States. Canadian carriers crossing the border must obtain a USDOT number and display it on their vehicles.
Do Canadian trucks need DOT numbers?
Yes, if they cross into the United States. Any Canadian commercial vehicle operating in interstate commerce in the US must have a USDOT number. Vehicles operating only within Canada do not need USDOT numbers but do need CVOR (Ontario) or equivalent provincial registration.
What size must DOT numbers be on a truck?
FMCSA requires USDOT numbers to be at least 2 inches (5 cm) high, in a colour that contrasts with the background, on both sides of the power unit. The lettering must be clearly legible during daylight hours at 50 feet.
How do I get a USDOT number in Canada?
Apply through the FMCSA website (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov). You will need your company information, insurance details, and vehicle information. Processing typically takes 1-3 business days. There is no fee for the USDOT number itself.
Can I use the same lettering for CVOR and DOT?
Yes. We produce combined CVOR + USDOT lettering packages that display both numbers consistently on both sides of the vehicle. This ensures compliance with both Ontario MTO and US FMCSA requirements.
