What is the difference between a heat pump and a furnace?

A heat pump moves heat from outside air (even in cold weather) and can both heat and cool. A furnace burns gas to produce heat. Heat pumps are more energy-efficient but may need a furnace backup below -20°C in Ontario winters. Many Ontario homeowners are switching to hybrid systems.

How much does HVAC installation cost in Ontario?

A full HVAC system installation in Ontario costs $6,000-$15,000 depending on system type, home size, and ductwork condition. A furnace alone runs $3,500-$6,500 installed; central AC $3,000-$5,500; and a heat pump $4,500-$9,000. Always get 3 quotes.

What size furnace do I need for my Ontario home?

Furnace sizing depends on home square footage, insulation, window quality, and ceiling height. A 1,200-1,800 sq ft Ontario home typically needs 60,000-80,000 BTU. Oversized furnaces short-cycle and waste energy. A proper Manual J heat load calculation is essential.

How long does a furnace last in Ontario?

A gas furnace in Ontario lasts 15-20 years with regular maintenance. Heat pumps last 12-15 years. Central AC units last 15-20 years. Ontario's harsh winters can shorten lifespan if maintenance is skipped. Plan to replace at 15 years to avoid emergency breakdowns.

What is the most energy-efficient heating system for Ontario?

Cold-climate heat pumps (like Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat) are the most energy-efficient, using 50-60% less energy than gas furnaces. However, they perform best as hybrid systems with a gas furnace backup for days below -25°C. Geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient overall but cost $20,000-$35,000.

Should I get a smart thermostat with my new HVAC system?

Yes. A smart thermostat (Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell) saves 10-15% on heating/cooling bills, or $150-$300/year in Ontario. Many HVAC contractors include one with new installations. Enbridge offers rebates up to $75 on qualifying smart thermostats.

What HVAC brands are best for Ontario winters?

Top-rated HVAC brands for Ontario include Lennox (best efficiency), Carrier (best reliability), Trane (best warranty), and Daikin (best heat pumps). All are widely serviced across Ontario. Avoid unknown brands — parts availability matters when it's -20°C.
