SFOA Signage Requirements Checklist

Under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 (SFOA), Ontario businesses must post compliant no-smoking signs in specific locations.

Where Signs Are Legally Required:

  • ✓ All entrances and exits — within 9 metres of doorways
  • ✓ Outdoor patios — at every access point to the patio area
  • ✓ Washrooms — inside all public and employee washrooms
  • ✓ Workplace vehicles — clearly visible in enclosed company vehicles
  • ✓ Common areas — lobbies, hallways, stairwells, parking garages
  • ✓ Playgrounds and sports fields — within 20 metres

Minimum sign size: 10 cm × 10 cm as per SFOA regulations. The prescribed no-smoking symbol must be clearly visible.

What is the minimum sign size under SFOA?

Signs must be at least 10 cm × 10 cm and display the prescribed no-smoking symbol. All our signs meet or exceed this requirement.

Do I need separate cannabis-specific signs?

Yes. If cannabis smoking is permitted in a designated outdoor area, you need a separate cannabis area sign in addition to standard no-smoking signs at all other locations.
