๐ฐ Real Canadian Businesses Fighting Fake Reviews Right Now
These are NOT hypothetical examples. These are real businesses with public social media battles:
๐ Toronto Pizza Restaurant โ Extortion Attack (February 2025)
The Attack: "Tony's Pizza" (King Street West, Toronto) received 7 fake 1-star reviews in 48 hours from accounts created the same day. All referenced "food poisoning" โ none were real customers.
The Demand: Owner received email: "Pay $2,500 Bitcoin or we post 50 more reviews." (Classic review extortion racket)
What They Did:
- Filed Competition Bureau complaint (Section 52 - deceptive practices)
- Contacted Toronto Police cybercrime unit
- Hired lawyer โ sent cease & desist
- Posted public response on ALL reviews explaining extortion attempt
- Deployed NFC review cards โ got 89 real reviews in 3 months
โ Outcome: Google removed 6 of 7 reviews after Competition Bureau inquiry. Rating recovered from 3.2 โ 4.7. Extortionists never identified but stopped after legal threat.

๐ Hamilton Salon โ Competitor Sabotage (November 2024)
The Attack: "Luxe Hair Studio" (James Street North, Hamilton) received 4 fraudulent reviews all posted within 2 hours, all mentioning "overpriced" and "rude staff." Owner recognized the writing style โ competitor from same street.
What They Did:
- Documented everything (screenshots, timestamps)
- Checked competitor's recent Google activity โ found they'd left 12 reviews in past month (suspicious)
- Lawyer sent formal defamation notice under Ontario Libel and Slander Act
- Filed small claims court application ($15,000 damages)
- Google removed 3 of 4 reviews after legal notice submitted
โ Outcome: Competitor settled out of court for $8,500. Signed agreement to never post reviews about Luxe Hair again. Remaining inauthentic review buried under 67 new real reviews.

The Discovery: Owner hired digital forensics firm โ traced 18 of 22 reviews to same IP address in Mumbai, India. Classic review farm.
What They Did:
- Submitted forensic report to Google legal department
- Filed Competition Bureau complaint with IP evidence
- Posted TikTok video explaining the attack (went viral โ 340K views)
- Deployed NFC plaques in every room + front desk
