How to Install Custom Car Decals — Step-by-Step Guide
How to Install Custom Car Decals
Whether you're applying a small logo or a full windshield banner, proper installation makes the difference between a professional finish and a bubbled mess. Follow our proven methods below.
Tools You'll Need
- Squeegee or credit card (wrapped in felt if available)
- Masking tape
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
- Lint-free cloth or microfibre towel
- Spray bottle with water (wet method)
- Heat gun — optional, for cold weather or curved surfaces
Method 1: The Hinge Method (Dry Install) — Best for Small Decals
Use this method for decals under 30 cm (12 inches). It gives you precise alignment with zero guesswork.
- Clean the surface — Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Do not use Windex or household cleaners — they leave residue that weakens adhesive bond.
- Position the decal — Hold the decal (still on backing paper) against the vehicle. Step back and check alignment. Use a tape measure if needed.
- Hinge with masking tape — Apply a strip of masking tape along the top edge of the decal, creating a hinge. The decal should flip up like a page in a book.
- Peel one side — Flip the decal up. Peel the backing paper away from the bottom half only. Cut away the removed backing so it doesn't interfere.
- Squeegee down — Flip the decal back down onto the surface. Using firm, overlapping strokes, squeegee from the tape hinge outward, pushing air bubbles to the edges.
- Remove the tape hinge — Carefully peel the masking tape away.
- Peel remaining backing — Lift the top portion gently, peel the remaining backing paper away.
- Final squeegee — Squeegee the top portion down with firm, overlapping strokes from centre outward.
Method 2: The Wet Install Method — Best for Large Decals & Windshield Banners
Use this method for anything larger than 30 cm or for curved surfaces like bumpers. The soapy water lets you reposition before the adhesive grabs.
- Mix your solution — Add 3 drops of dish soap to a standard spray bottle filled with water. Do not use more — too much soap prevents the adhesive from ever curing.
- Spray the surface generously — The entire application area should be wet.
- Peel the backing — Remove all backing paper from the decal.
- Position the decal — Place it on the wet surface. You can slide it around for perfect alignment — this is why the wet method exists.
- Squeegee from centre outward — Using firm pressure, push water and air bubbles from the centre to the edges. Work in overlapping rows.
- Let dry 24 hours — The soapy water needs to fully evaporate for the adhesive to bond at full strength. Do not drive through rain for 24 hours if possible.
Do not install below 10°C (50°F). The adhesive requires warmth to bond properly. If installing in cold weather, use a heat gun on LOW to warm the surface first. Ideal installation temperature is 15–25°C (60–77°F).
Do not use a drive-through car wash for 72 hours. Hand wash only during the curing period. After 72 hours, the adhesive reaches full bond strength and your decal is car-wash safe.
Pro Tips
- Tiny bubbles? — Poke with a pin at a 45° angle and squeegee flat. Small bubbles under 3 mm often disappear on their own within 48 hours as the adhesive cures.
- Curved surfaces — Use a heat gun on LOW while squeegeeing. The heat makes the vinyl pliable so it conforms to compound curves without wrinkling.
- Cold weather — If you must install below 10°C, warm the surface and the decal with a heat gun. Keep the vinyl warm throughout application.
- Garage install — Best results come from installing in a garage or shaded area. Direct sunlight can cause the adhesive to grab too quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix air bubbles after installation?
Small air bubbles (under 3 mm) typically disappear on their own within 24–48 hours as the adhesive cures and the vinyl relaxes. For larger bubbles, use a pin to poke a tiny hole at a 45-degree angle, then press the air out with a squeegee or your thumb. The pinhole will be invisible once the air is released.
Can I install car decals in cold weather?
You should not install decals below 10°C (50°F). The adhesive becomes stiff and won't bond properly, leading to peeling within days. If you must install in cold weather, use a heat gun on LOW to warm both the vehicle surface and the decal to at least 15°C before application. Installing in a heated garage is the best cold-weather option.
Will decals stick to curved surfaces like bumpers?
Yes — but only if you use cast vinyl (not calendered). Our 3M cast vinyl is only 2 mil thick and has memory-free properties, meaning it conforms to compound curves, rivets, and recessed areas without lifting. Use the wet install method and a heat gun for best results on complex curves.
