Understanding GHS & WHMIS Hazard Labeling

โš ๏ธ What is GHS and WHMIS 2015?

GHS (Globally Harmonized System): International standard for classifying and labeling chemicals developed by the United Nations. Standardizes hazard pictograms, signal words, and safety statements worldwide.

WHMIS 2015 (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System): Canadian implementation of GHS, mandated by Health Canada and enforced by provincial Ministries of Labour. Requires standardized labels on all hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. Aligns with federal Hazardous Products Act and Hazardous Products Regulations.

Who Must Comply: All Canadian workplaces using, storing, or handling chemicals classified as hazardous (flammable, corrosive, toxic, irritant, environmental hazard, etc.). This includes manufacturers, distributors, laboratories, warehouses, farms, automotive shops, cleaning services, and any facility with chemical products.

๐Ÿ“‹ Six Mandatory GHS Label Elements (WHMIS 2015):

  1. Product Identifier: Chemical name exactly as it appears on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Must be identical to Section 1 of SDS.
  2. Hazard Pictograms: Standardized red diamond symbols indicating hazard type (flame, skull, corrosion, exclamation mark, etc.). Minimum size: 1cmยฒ or 10% of label area, whichever is greater.
  3. Signal Word: Either "Danger" (severe hazards) or "Warning" (less severe hazards). Only one signal word per label, based on most serious hazard.
  4. Hazard Statements (H-statements): Standardized phrases describing hazard nature (e.g., "H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour", "H302: Harmful if swallowed"). Use codes from SDS Section 2.
  5. Precautionary Statements (P-statements): Safe handling, storage, disposal instructions (e.g., "P210: Keep away from heat/sparks", "P280: Wear protective gloves"). Maximum 6 P-statements recommended for label readability.
  6. Supplier Identifier: Manufacturer or importer name, address, and phone number (Canadian contact required for imported products).

All text must be in both English and French for federally-regulated workplaces or interprovincial commerce. Ontario-only facilities may use English-only labels but bilingual is best practice.

GHS Hazard Pictogram Reference Guide

Nine standardized pictograms communicate immediate hazard recognition. Each symbol indicates specific hazard classes requiring particular safety precautions:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Flame (GHS02)

Hazard Classes: Flammable gases, aerosols, liquids, solids; Self-reactive substances; Pyrophoric substances; Self-heating substances.

Examples: Gasoline, acetone, spray paints, adhesives, some cleaning solvents.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Exploding Bomb (GHS01)

Hazard Classes: Explosives; Self-reactive substances (severe); Organic peroxides (severe).

Examples: Fireworks, some industrial catalysts, certain laboratory reagents.

๐Ÿ”ฅโญ• Flame Over Circle (GHS03)

Hazard Classes: Oxidizing gases, liquids, solids (substances that intensify fire).

Examples: Bleach (sodium hypochlorite), hydrogen peroxide, pool shock chemicals.

๐Ÿงช Corrosion (GHS05)

Hazard Classes: Skin corrosion; Serious eye damage; Corrosive to metals.

Examples: Acids (muriatic, sulfuric), bases (drain cleaners, lye), rust removers.

๐Ÿ’€ Skull & Crossbones (GHS06)

Hazard Classes: Acute toxicity (fatal or toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or skin contact).

Examples: Pesticides, cyanides, some industrial chemicals, concentrated poisons.

โš ๏ธ Exclamation Mark (GHS07)

Hazard Classes: Acute toxicity (harmful); Skin/eye irritation; Skin sensitization; Narcotic effects.

Examples: Ammonia, paint thinners, some detergents, irritating chemicals.

โ˜ฃ๏ธ Health Hazard (GHS08)

Hazard Classes: Carcinogen; Mutagenicity; Reproductive toxicity; Respiratory sensitization; Target organ toxicity; Aspiration hazard.

Examples: Asbestos, formaldehyde, benzene, silica dust (long-term health risks).

๐ŸŒ Environment (GHS09)

Hazard Classes: Hazardous to aquatic environment (acute or chronic).

Examples: Pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, certain detergents (aquatic toxicity).

๐ŸงŠ Gas Cylinder (GHS04)

Hazard Classes: Gases under pressure (compressed, liquefied, refrigerated liquefied, dissolved).

Examples: Propane, compressed air, CO2 cylinders, refrigerants.

Chemical-Resistant Label Materials for Harsh Environments

GHS labels must remain legible in extreme industrial conditions. Our materials meet BS5609 certification (marine-grade durability standard) ensuring compliance throughout chemical container lifecycle.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Industrial-Grade Label Materials:

  • Chemical-Resistant Vinyl: Won't dissolve, fade, or degrade when exposed to solvents, acids, bases, oils, or industrial cleaners. Tested against common workplace chemicals (acetone, toluene, MEK, caustic soda, sulfuric acid).
  • Polyester (PET): Superior tear resistance and heat tolerance (up to 150ยฐC / 300ยฐF). Ideal for chemicals stored near heat sources or autoclaved laboratory containers.
  • UV-Resistant Inks: Prevents fading under fluorescent warehouse lighting, outdoor chemical storage, or direct sunlight exposure. Maintains pictogram visibility for 5+ years.
  • Waterproof & Moisture-Proof: Sealed laminate construction prevents water ingress. Labels remain legible even in humid warehouses, outdoor chemical sheds, or condensation-prone cold storage.
  • Extreme Temperature Range: Adhesive maintains bond from -40ยฐC to +80ยฐC (Canadian winters to heated industrial facilities). Won't peel in freezer storage or hot production environments.
  • Abrasion-Resistant Lamination: Protects against scuffing from forklifts, pallet handling, and repeated container movement. Essential for high-turnover warehouse chemicals.

โœ… BS5609 Certification (Marine-Grade Standard):

Our materials meet BS5609 Section 2 and Section 3 standards - the international benchmark for labels on hazardous material containers transported by sea. This certification ensures: Labels survive 3-month saltwater immersion test, Pictograms remain legible after abrasion testing, Ink doesn't run or fade when exposed to chemicals, and Adhesive maintains bond on various substrates (HDPE, metal, glass, fiber drums). While BS5609 is designed for marine transport, these same durability requirements make it ideal for harsh industrial workplace environments.

Supplier Labels vs. Workplace Labels: Which Do You Need?

๐Ÿ“ฆ Supplier Labels

Required on: Original containers from manufacturers/distributors entering Canadian workplaces.

Must Include All 6 Elements:

  • Product identifier
  • Hazard pictograms
  • Signal word (Danger/Warning)
  • Hazard statements (H-codes)
  • Precautionary statements (P-codes)
  • Supplier identifier (name, address, phone)

Who Needs These: Chemical manufacturers, distributors, importers selling products to Canadian workplaces.

๐Ÿญ Workplace Labels

Required on: Secondary containers when chemicals are transferred from original packaging.

Minimum Required Elements:

  • Product identifier (matching SDS)
  • Safe handling information (precautions)
  • Reference to Safety Data Sheet
  • Pictograms optional but highly recommended for immediate hazard recognition

Who Needs These: End-user facilities transferring chemicals to spray bottles, smaller containers, unmarked drums, or decanting operations. Most common for in-house safety compliance.

๐Ÿ’ก Quick Decision Guide:

Are you a chemical manufacturer or distributor selling products? โ†’ You need Supplier Labels (full 6-element GHS compliance).

Are you an end-user facility (factory, lab, warehouse) transferring chemicals into secondary containers? โ†’ You need Workplace Labels (simplified but must reference SDS).
