Ontario Building Code Sign Requirements — Exit, Fire, Occupancy & Safety
The Ontario Building Code, O. Reg. 332/12 mandates specific signage for every commercial, industrial, and institutional building in Ontario. From exit signs to fire safety plans to occupancy load postings, these are not optional decorations — they are legal requirements enforced by municipal building inspectors and the Ontario Fire Marshal. Non-compliance can result in orders to vacate, fines under the Building Code Act, 1992, S.O. 1992, c. 23, and personal liability for building owners.
This guide covers every sign required under the Ontario Building Code, including technical specifications, placement rules, and enforcement provisions.
