Banner Printing Guide — Indoor vs Outdoor Materials, Sizes & Hanging Options

Banner Printing — Everything You Need to Know

Banners remain one of the most versatile and cost-effective forms of signage. Whether you are promoting a grand opening, marking a construction site, decorating a trade show booth, or advertising a sale, a well-designed banner delivers your message at a fraction of the cost of permanent signage.

At Niagara Stands Out, we print banners daily for businesses across Ontario. This guide covers materials, sizes, finishing options, and pricing to help you order the right banner for your needs.

Indoor vs Outdoor Banner Materials

Outdoor Vinyl Banners (13oz Scrim)

The workhorse of outdoor signage. 13oz scrim vinyl is a PVC-coated polyester fabric that handles rain, wind, snow, and direct sunlight. It is the default choice for any banner that will live outdoors.

  • Weight: 13 oz per square yard
  • Finish: Matte or gloss
  • Durability: 2-5 years outdoors
  • Finishing: Heat-welded hems + grommets every 2 feet
  • Best for: Storefronts, fences, building walls, construction sites

Heavy-Duty Vinyl (15oz-18oz)

For large banners in high-wind locations, 15oz or 18oz vinyl provides extra rigidity and tear resistance. Used for building wraps, highway overpass banners, and permanent outdoor installations.

Mesh Vinyl (Wind-Permeable)

Mesh banners have tiny perforations that allow wind to pass through, reducing wind load by up to 70%. Essential for fence-mounted banners, building facades, and any location where the banner will face strong winds.

  • Wind reduction: Up to 70%
  • Visibility: Slightly reduced (about 30% open area) but still highly readable
  • Best for: Construction fencing, stadium banners, multi-story building wraps

Indoor Fabric Banners

For trade shows, retail displays, and indoor events, fabric banners offer a premium look and feel. Dye-sublimation printing on polyester fabric produces vibrant colours with a soft, wrinkle-resistant finish.

  • Material: Polyester fabric (various weights)
  • Finish: Soft, matte, no glare
  • Best for: Trade show backdrops, retail displays, step-and-repeat walls

Banner Sizes and Readability

Choosing the right banner size depends on viewing distance, mounting location, and content volume. Here are the most common sizes and their applications:

Size Best For Viewing Distance
2' x 4' Indoor tables, counters 5-15 feet
2' x 6' Retractable stands, indoor 10-20 feet
3' x 6' Storefronts, small fences 20-40 feet
4' x 8' Building walls, large fences 30-60 feet
4' x 12' Road-facing, construction 50-100 feet
Custom Building wraps, oversize Varies

Readability rule: 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance. A banner on a storefront viewed from across the street (50+ feet) needs a headline with letters at least 5 inches tall.

Finishing Options

Grommets

Metal grommets are punched through reinforced hems every 18-24 inches along the banner edges. They are the most common mounting method, compatible with rope, zip ties, bungee cords, and S-hooks.

Pole Pockets

Sewn sleeves along the top and bottom edges that accept a pole or dowel. Creates a cleaner, taut display. Standard for street light pole banners and retractable stand banners.

Heat-Welded Hems

All outdoor banners should have heat-welded or sewn hems to reinforce edges and prevent tearing. We include hemming on every outdoor banner at no extra charge.

Wind Slits

For banners in high-wind locations, we can cut horizontal slits that allow air to pass through without tearing the material. This is an alternative to mesh vinyl for moderate wind conditions.

Design Tips for Effective Banners

  1. Less is more. A banner is not a brochure. Keep text to a headline, one supporting line, and contact info.
  2. High contrast. Dark text on a light background (or vice versa) reads best from distance.
  3. Large fonts. Your headline should be readable from your maximum viewing distance.
  4. Call to action. Include a phone number, website, or QR code so viewers can act immediately.
  5. Bleed and safe zone. Extend backgrounds 1" beyond the trim line, keep text 2" from all edges.
