Ontario Electrical Safety Signs — ESA Compliance Requirements
Every building in Ontario with electrical installations must display proper safety signage. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) enforces these requirements under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (O. Reg. 164/99) and Regulation 22/04.
Whether you're a building owner, electrician, or property manager, here's what you need to know about electrical safety signage in Ontario.
Required Electrical Safety Signs
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code and ESA guidelines require the following signs:

- "DANGER — HIGH VOLTAGE" on all equipment rated above 750V

- Arc flash warning labels per CSA Z462 on all electrical equipment
- "DANGER — DO NOT ENTER" on high-voltage vaults and substations
- Equipment identification labels on all circuit breakers, disconnects, and transformers
- Clearance markings — 1 metre minimum clearance in front of electrical panels
CSA Z462 Arc Flash Requirements
The Canadian Standards Association Z462 (Workplace Electrical Safety) requires arc flash hazard labels on all electrical equipment. These labels must include:
- Nominal system voltage
- Arc flash boundary
- Available incident energy (cal/cm²) or hazard/risk category
- Required PPE for the specific equipment
- Shock hazard approach boundaries
OHSA Requirements for Electrical Safety Signs
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), employers must ensure adequate signage in workplaces. This overlaps with ESA requirements, as we detailed in our Ontario Construction Site Safety Signs guide.
Key OHSA electrical sign requirements include:
- Warning signs at all electrical hazard areas
- Lock-out/tag-out procedure signs posted at all disconnect points
- Signs must be in English and French where required by workplace demographics
- Bilingual requirements apply under Ontario's OHSA for diverse workplaces
Sign Specifications and Standards
Electrical safety signs in Ontario must comply with CSA Z321 (Signs and Symbols for the Workplace) and follow these specifications:
- DANGER signs: Red header, white text, black border
- WARNING signs: Orange header, black text
- CAUTION signs: Yellow header, black text
- Materials: Must withstand the environment (indoor vs outdoor, chemical exposure)
- Size: Must be legible from the normal approach distance
For guidance on choosing the right materials, see our Reflective vs Non-Reflective Signs comparison.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The ESA conducts thousands of inspections annually. Non-compliance can result in:
- Orders to comply with immediate timelines
- Deficiency notices that must be corrected before power reconnection
- OHSA fines up to $100,000 per offence for individuals, $1.5 million for corporations
- Insurance implications — missing signage can void liability coverage
