Boat Registration Decals Ontario: Size, Placement & Rules

Properly displaying your boat registration numbers is a legal requirement in Ontario and many other Canadian provinces. These decals serve as your vessel’s primary identification, ensuring that marine authorities can quickly verify ownership and compliance. Understanding the specific size, placement, and formatting rules is essential to avoid fines or operational delays during inspections.

Decal Size and Formatting Requirements

The size of your registration decal depends on the length of your vessel. For boats under 9.14 metres (30 feet), the characters must be at least 7.6 cm (3 inches) high. For vessels 9.14 metres or longer, the characters must be at least 10.2 cm (4 inches) high. The font must be sans-serif, with a stroke width of at least 1 cm (0.4 inches). Characters must be clearly legible from a distance of 30 metres (100 feet) under normal daylight conditions.

Correct Placement on the Vessel

Registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the forward half of the vessel, typically on the hull or bow. They must be placed above the waterline and below the gunwale. Ensure the area is clean, dry, and free of debris before application. The numbers must contrast sharply with the background colour of the hull to ensure visibility. For example, dark decals should not be applied to dark hulls without a contrasting background panel.

Capacity Plates and Safety Information

This plate indicates the maximum weight capacity, maximum number of persons, and maximum horsepower allowed. While not always required to be displayed externally, it must be present on the vessel.
